- 요약In response to the pressing need for climate change mitigation, global economies must align a zero-carbon energy supply with the electrification of energy demand. In residential settings, this shift requires households to transition to electricity-powered transportation, heating, and cooking. However, these electricity-intensive transitions must also address the intersection of equity concerns with the provision of sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy services. California's progressive policies aim to support these sustainability-focused strategies, but residents face growing challenges related to the affordability and reliability of electricity, including the increasing frequency of power outages, which could undermine these efforts. Thus, Northern California serves as a critical early case study to examine the policy pressures and public perceptions of the so-called "Electrification of Everything."Chapter 1 offers a comprehensive overview of how energy equity is conceptualized within the evolving energy justice literature, tracing its roots in environmental justice and fuel poverty scholarship. It provides a critical review of the key practical challenges and opportunities involved in implementing equitable energy transitions.Adopting the household as the unit of analysis, the next three original research papers combine metered energy usage data, census data, interviews, and climate data to explore the underlying energy vulnerabilities, impacts, and perceptions associated with residential energy transitions.Chapter 2 employs machine learning methods to predict the prevalence of energy vulnerabili- ties in households across the United States. By developing a multidimensional understanding of physical, behavioral, and economic energy insecurities, this chapter investigates various coping strategies adopted by households facing affordability challenges and examines who is classified as energy poor based on different metrics.Chapter 3 examines the private and public impacts of residential electrification in Northern California, a critical component of the state's sustainability and climate action plans. By modeling different levels of end-use electrification using gas and electricity usage data, this chapter assesses changes in energy bills for households and the timing and magnitude of peak load for the grid. It proposes and evaluates income-based household transition prioritization strategies to inform equitable electrification policies.Chapter 4 draws on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with residents of the Bay Area (California) to explore perceptions of electrification amid increasing concerns about electric reliability due to climate-induced power interruptions. This chapter explores the "social dimensions of unreliability" and how they shape the willingness of households to participate in electricity-intensive energy transitions.The dissertation concludes with a discussion of how these chapters, situated within an interdisciplinary research framework, can contribute to integrating social equity concerns into the study of energy transitions.
