초록/해제
요약Music education in the United States is strongly influenced by the past. Although it is debatable whether this is beneficial, problematic, or both, the past appears to influence what is taught and how it is taught. This relationship has largely gone unexamined by researchers. In this study, I proposed that the construct of the past is worthy of examination in music education. Subsequently, as a first attempt to empirically explore this phenomenon, I investigated whether a specific person-level trait, nostalgia proneness, could explain this apparent past-emphasis in music education. I administered five self-report measures of nostalgia designed to ascertain personal (Southampton Nostalgia Scale; Batcho Nostalgia Inventory), historical (Holbrook Nostalgia Scale; Dispositions Toward the Past Scale), and collective nostalgia (Index of Nostalgia Proneness) to music educators. Responses varied widely, suggesting that music educators, as a group, do not have a generally nostalgic disposition. I then administered these same measures to other music professionals, other teachers, and members of the general population so that I could compare responses between groups. I constructed a multivariate multiple regression model to examine the independent effect of group and related demographic variables on each measure of nostalgia. Overall, teachers tended to be more nostalgic than other groups, with music educators falling between teachers and other music professionals. This evidence supports frameworks of music teacher identity construction that propose a duality between the musician/performer identity and the teacher identity.
