초록/해제
요약Forms of Preservation examines the art and writing about American landscapes, focusing on the Rocky Mountains, from around 1870 to around 1948, as Euroamerican settlers identified and valued certain landscapes to be preserved under federal protection. It looks at the forms that those artists used and created not just to describe these landscapes, but to reimagine them as preserved land, a new category for conceptualizing the landscapes they most valued. This interplay between human culture and physical landscape produced long-lasting effects on public preservation policy in the U.S., in the form of the creation of National Parks and National Scenic Trails, as well as on artistic forms like the literary Western novel. Even more than tracing those impacts, though, this dissertation is interested in exploring the ways that arguments for preservation in the Rocky Mountains and the rest of the U.S. often required the creation of new literary forms to describe new categories of preservationist thought.
