- 요약When learning a second language (L2), encoding precisely which sounds belong in which words can be difficult-especially when words contain confusable sounds. Previous research has shown that learners who acquire more reliable phonetic categorization and a larger vocabulary size tend to encode sounds in words more precisely. However, limited research has investigated how lexical characteristics like phonological neighborhood density (PND) and lexical frequency impact the precision of encoding. Most research either ignores these variables or tries to control stimuli so that they will not impact the results.This dissertation builds on previous research by investigating how categorization and vocabulary size modulate the encoding of a confusable vowel contrast; however, it also expands into new territory by selecting auditory lexical decision task items that vary in PND and lexical frequency. Words that require more effort to process, such as low frequency and high PND words, were predicted to be encoded more precisely because miscommunication is more likely to occur if these words are mispronounced/misperceived. Miscommunication is a form of friction which can highlight phonetic forms and facilitate encoding.Sixty native Korean and twenty native English speakers completed three tasks: an auditory lexical decision task, an /ɛ/-/ae/ categorization task, and vocabulary size test. Logistic regression analyses of lexical decision task responses show that participants with more reliable categorization were more accurate overall, but better categorization was more beneficial for responses to /ae/ items. Second, participants were more accurate on items with lower frequency and higher PND, but the effects of lexical characteristics were strongest for participants with less reliable vowel categorization. Third, the effect of PND was modulated by vocabulary size and lexical frequency so that the effect of PND was stronger for participants with a larger vocabulary, but the effect of PND was mitigated in high frequency words. These results align with previous studies showing that creating precise representations is modulated by perception abilities and vocabulary size. This dissertation advances our understanding of language learning by showing that both PND and lexical frequency are also variables that impact the precision of phonolexical encoding. These results align with the idea that friction during communication can be a beneficial form of feedback that helps learners encode confusable sounds into representations.
