- 요약This dissertation uses ethnographic methods to document a life history of Irish sean-nos singer Eilis Ni Shuilleabhain (b. 1943). This research archives and offers an intersectional feminist interpretation her extensive contributions to the genre of Irish traditional music as a practitioner, composer, collector, festival organizer, and educator. I argue that women's stories have been underrepresented in ethnomusicological scholarship and contemporary feminist discussions related to Irish traditional music, and I amplify Ni Shuilleabhain's voice to ameliorate these silences. Emergent from this study is the theme of resilience - on an individual, communal, and cultural level - which I trace through the realms of wellness, language, and song. Chapter 1 provides the biographical details of Eilis Ni Shuilleabhain, the methodology of this long-term ethnographic study, and situates the research within the intellectual history of the individual as a locus of study in ethnomusicology and folklore. Chapter 2 contextualizes the genre of sean-nos singing in Irish traditional music. Chapter 3 examines how singing has facilitated resilience by a) tracing emotional themes in Ni Shuilleabhain's extensive repertoire, b) looking at the role of the transmission of song to future generations, and c) interpreting an illustrative case study of turning tragedy into a memorialization through the Eigse Dhiarmuid Ui Shuilleabhain music festival. Chapter 4 discusses how Eilis Ni Shuilleabhain's contributions as a collector of songs, teacher, and composer contribute to local Irish language resilience. By focusing on Eilis Ni Shuilleabhain's life, this dissertation bridges life history with critical ethnography. The research addresses intersections of resilience, language sustainability, gender politics, and applied ethnomusicological understanding of wellness.
