- 요약This dissertation examines the exclusive or predominant use of distorted vocal techniques (commonly referred to as "harsh vocals") as the primary unifying musical characteristic of extreme metal genres. Drawing on musicological analysis, genre theory, and historical research, it identifies harsh vocals as the most consistent and perceptually salient indicator of extreme metal genre affiliation. While genres such as death metal, black metal, and grindcore differ in certain core aesthetics, their shared use of harsh vocals serves as a defining genre marker of the extreme metal supergenre.This dissertation argues that extreme metal constitutes a clearly delineated category within the broader metal landscape, rather than a loosely applied descriptor. In this context, the term extreme refers to specific musical characteristics, with the normative use of harsh vocals being central. As such, claims that all doom metal belongs to the extreme metal category, regardless of vocal style, are unfounded. Similarly, applying the label to bands like Sunn O))), based on perceptually extreme traits like slow tempos, high volume, or low-frequency content, misrepresents how the term extreme metal is used in both present and historical genre analysis.This paper further shows that use of harsh vocals historically contributed to extreme metal's distinct sonic identity and separation from less extreme forms of thrash into its own category. Clean vocals are widely perceived as incompatible with the supergenre's core and, when not subordinate to harsh vocals, typically lead to alternate genre labeling (e.g., progressive, gothic, or folk metal). Ultimately, harsh vocals are not an optional stylistic trait but a defining requirement of extreme metal, shaping the boundaries and meaning of the supergenre.
