- 요약Misleading data visualizations are becoming increasingly prevalent across various media platforms, often distorting viewers' interpretations of the depicted data. Many individuals lack the cognitive processes to critically evaluate these visualizations, leaving them vulnerable to misinterpretation. Therefore, developing effective educational interventions to enhance viewers' resistance to misleading visualizations is crucial for their accurate interpretation of quantitative information. However, the optimal type of such interventions remains unclear, particularly regarding which specific cognitive processes these interventions should be targeted and how instructional design should address them.To address this gap, this dissertation presents a comprehensive review of prior frameworks on data visualization comprehension to identify key cognitive processes that educational interventions for misleading visualizations should address. By applying this framework to the context of misleading visualizations, I argue that both bottom-up and top-down cognitive processes must be enhanced to enable viewers' critical engagement with misleading visualizations and combat deceptive effects. A review of current educational approaches further revealed that strengthening viewers' perceptual skills (i.e., bottom-up) and sense-making competencies (i.e., top-down) can effectively support this goal. However, existing interventions typically address a limited range of misleading visualization types, falling short of real-world complexity.Building on these findings, I conducted a series of empirical studies to explore instructional designs that foster perceptual skills and sense-making competencies across diverse misleading visualization types. In Study 1, I compared the magnitude of deceptive effects across various types of misleading visualization to ensure that subsequent instruction designs addressed a wide range of misleading visualizations. In Study 2, I investigated perceptual training interventions, examining the effectiveness of different feedback types in perceptual training. Informative feedback, which offers textual or visual explanations of misleading elements, proved more effective than simple feedback in improving viewers' perceptual skills for misleading visualizations. However, the perceptual training showed limited generalization (i.e., near transfer) to unfamiliar misleading visualizations. To address this limitation, Study 3 focused on enhancing sense-making competencies, with the aim of facilitating broader transfer. Recognizing that misleading visualizations often deviate from conventional design principles, the sense-making activities prompted learners to compare accurate and misleading versions during guided activities. This comparison-based sense-making activity was especially beneficial for learners with a low tendency for effortful thinking, offering cognitive scaffolding for critical engagement. Yet, overcoming the challenge of near transfer, extending learning beyond visually similar misleading visualizations, remained a persistent issue.Together, the studies in this dissertation provide insights on how to design comprehensive and effective educational interventions to combat misleading visualizations. By targeting both bottom-up and top-down cognitive processes, this dissertation demonstrates a more holistic framework for strengthening viewers' resistance to a wide range of misleading visualizations.
