■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  musical  form  in  post-millennial  Tamil  film  songs,  placing  these  works  within  broader  discourses  of  cosmopolitanism,  interculturality,  and  third  space  theory.  It  investigates  how  Kollywood  songs  mediate  between  local,  regional,  and  global  influences,  producing  complex,  hybrid,  musical  structures  that  challenge  traditional  categorizations.  By  combining  music  theory,  ethnomusicology,  and  cultural  studies,  this  study  explores  how  formal  structure  functions  as  a  site  of  negotiation  between  distinct  musical  and  cultural  traditions.  An  intercultural  approach  to  musical  form  allows  for  a  broader  understanding  of  Tamil  film  songs.  This  study  specifically  incorporates  Carnatic  music  theory,  which  offers  one  foundation  for  formal  organization,  and  Western  popular  music  theory,  particularly  verse-chorus  form,  which  informs  how  Kollywood  songs  engage  with  global  musical  conventions.  By  synthesizing  these  theoretical  perspectives,  the  dissertation  shows  how  Kollywood  songs  blend  contrasting  formal  strategies,  facilitating  the  coexistence  of  local  and  global  traditions  within  a  dynamic  third  space.  While  this  intercultural  approach  provides  essential  insights  into  the  structure  of  these  songs,  it  does  not  fully  account  for  the  complexities  of  their  formal  organization.  The  theoretical  frameworks  from  both  traditions  offer  foundational  understanding,  but  there  are  gaps  that  need  to  be  addressed.  To  address  these  gaps,  a  narrative  approach  to  musical  form  considers  the  significant  role  storytelling  and  multimedia  play  in  shaping  the  form  of  Kollywood  songs.  Rather  than  isolating  musical  sections,  the  narrative  approach  explores  how  lyrical  content,  music  videos,  and  the  film  as  a  whole  interact  to  guide  deviations  in  formal  structure.  By  integrating  both  approaches,  this  dissertation  offers  a  full  picture  of  how  form  operates  in  Tamil  film  songs,  revealing  how  the  fusion  of  intercultural  musical  traditions  and  multimedia  creates  highly  complex  and  dynamic  musical  structures.  By  framing  Kollywood  songs  as  a  cosmopolitan  genre  studied  through  intercultural  and  narrative  methodologies,  I  place  them  in  a  new,  third  space.  This  study  contributes  to  broader  discussions  on  music  theory  and  musical  form  beyond  the  West,  and  the  role  of  multimedia  in  musical  analysis.  Ultimately,  I  argue  that  Tamil  film  songs  function  as  sites  for  formal  and  cultural  negotiation,  offering  new  insights  in  to  how  we  can  intentionally  and  appropriately  study  global  popular  music.
