- 요약Auditory noise is a reliable feature of a complex, dynamic environment. Often, noise creates challenges for a range of abilities including word learning, cognition, and communication. This is particularly true for young children who struggle to hear in noise because of poorer selective attention and smaller working memory capacity. Yet they somehow manage to learn, communicate, and build important skills even with chronic exposure to noise. How do young children navigate noisy environments and how do they reason about them in the first place? Chapter 1 begins broadly by describing the basic properties of sound and some of the consequences of noise exposure on children. It will also address the inequity associated with the distribution of noise across demographic groups. Chapter 2 examines the degree to which children understand there exists an alignment between the auditory environment and an agent's goals. Chapter 3 explores children's reasoning about communication in noisy environments, including adjustments to their own behavior to mitigate some of the breakdown in communication that noise often causes. Chapter 4 investigates whether children possess a metacognition of their own cognitive performance in noise. Taken together, this work offers that, by the preschool years, children not only reason about the effects of noise, but they also seek ways to optimize their performance and interactions in noise.
