요약Proxy variables such as smoking status, marital status, and housing stability are widely used in clinical research as strong representations for unmeasured individual-level factors. These proxies are valued for their ability to guide clinical decision-making when direct data collection is challenging. One of the most frequently used proxies is race. Race has historically been treated as a biological factor in medicine and, in many cases, still is today. This dissertation delves into three key areas that deconstruct race into its constituent components: (1) Uncovering novel associations between real-world social factors and health outcomes across disease states, focusing on areas that have previously been overlooked, (2) Quantifying the relative influence of social determinants like socioeconomic position and healthcare access versus genetic risk, and (3) Developing novel statistical methods to characterize patient phenotypes independent of race, while providing a methodological framework to guide future work in using race more thoughtfully and intelligibly when necessary.
