요약This dissertation examines the impacts of environmental factors, likely to be altered by climate change, on painted turtles (Chrysemys picta), focusing on their health, survival, and reproduction. Because turtles are one of the most vulnerable vertebrate clades, it is essential to obtain a deeper understanding of how shifts in habitat conditions affect their well-being. While previous studies have emphasized how rising global temperatures skew sex ratios toward females in many turtles with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), this dissertation expands that body of knowledge by investigating habitat features that may indirectly influence these ratios and other factors affecting the survival and reproductive success of female turtles. First, this dissertation provides a synthetic view of anthropogenic disturbances affecting female nest-site choice, and consequently, hatchling survival of turtles with TSD or genotypic sex determination (GSD), plus TSD sex ratios. Second, this research explores how temperature affects female turtle physiology, particularly circulating sex hormones, as those levels would be allocated to eggs, thus representing a potential route for climate change to influence sex ratios prior to egg-laying. While the findings suggest that adult females may be resilient to changes in circulating hormone levels during the fall, further research is needed to conclusively determine whether females are truly buffered against these effects of elevated temperatures during the egg-producing season.Third, in addition to examining hormone-related changes, this dissertation also addresses how environmental changes, such as floating vegetation cover, which is expected to increase under environmental change, might impact turtle behavior and health, particularly vitamin D synthesis. Overgrown floating vegetation could potentially reduce UVB exposure, but our findings suggest that turtles may be resilient to these changes, at least during the fall. Lastly, this research also investigates how vegetation cover influences habitat selection, honing in on our understanding of the ecological relevance of a turtle's environment. The research combines both field and laboratory experiments to assess the implications of habitat change on turtle populations. By evaluating both the physiological and behavioral responses of turtles, this work provides a more comprehensive understanding of how climate change could affect individual survival and population persistence. Ultimately, the dissertation emphasizes the need for future research to explore these challenges and adapt conservation strategies for turtles in rapidly changing environments.
