- 요약Bathymetry and Topography are two long-form compositions and albums that stand alone and together form a diptych, linked conceptually and musically. Both were written during my PhD research at Princeton University. In many ways these pieces are two sides of a coin, or reflections of one another. This is alluded to in the titles, with Bathymetry being the measurement of the depth of the ocean floor beneath sea level, and Topography being the mapping of land above sea level. The two compositions have correspondingly different personalities. Bathymetry is more introverted and veiled, and Topography is more extroverted and direct. Bathymetry has a mysterious, underwater character, and Topography has a character evocative of wide-open spaces. In this dissertation, I examine the form of this diptych, the use of process-based techniques, the role of the drum set, the use of synthesizers, the relation of the compositions and albums, and stylistic and genre considerations. Finally, in conclusion, I examine the role this project has played in my artistic life and how it has shaped my artistic trajectory.
