요약Male frogs court females from within crowded choruses, selecting for mechanisms allowing them to call at favorable times relative to the calls of rivals. To accomplish this, males must continuously evaluate the fluctuating acoustic scene generated by their competitors for opportune times to call. My dissertation explored the causes and consequences of calling interactions in túngara frogs (Physalaemus (=Engystompos) pustulosus). This species' call consists of a frequency-modulated 'whine' followed by one or more 'chuck' notes which are highly attractive to females, and males often form dense choruses. Via observations of live choruses and playback experiments, I explored interaction patterns across varied social environments and the sensory triggers males used to time their calls relative to their rivals'. I found that: 1) Though rivals alternated calls without overlapping in smaller choruses, stereotyped call overlap became increasingly prevalent in larger choruses. Here, the chucks of leading calls were overlapped by the beginnings of the whines of following calls, causing females to discriminate against leading calls and to prefer following calls. However, costs to leading calls were ameliorated when more chucks were added to these calls. 2) Males whose calls exhibited certain amplitude and frequency profiles invited more call overlap from their rivals, meaning these socially-imposed attractiveness costs were not borne equally by all chorusing males. Furthermore, I found that chorusing dynamics are more complex than is typically acknowledged, with temporal constraints on calling responses and emergent fluctuations in chorus noise exerting important influences on these dynamics. 3) Male sensory system tuning facilitated the socially-mediated flexibility seen in calling interactions, with the stereotyped frequency and amplitude sweep of the whine forming a call trigger that seems to become salient when encountered in the acoustic environments of denser choruses, thus allowing males to shift from alternation to overlap when avoidance of overlap is impossible. Overall, these findings demonstrate that adaptive flexible interactions across social environments can be driven by simple mechanisms interacting in complex ways with predictable acoustic regularities encountered in different social environments. This highlights how sensory-motor tuning can mediate the interplay between signal perception and production to facilitate adaptive communication strategies.
