- 요약Adaptations remix and derive their elements from another work. Yet what can be defined as an adaptation is rapidly growing in our multimodal, ever connected world. This dissertation looks at three non-traditional adaptions. Each pairing represents a different aspect of adaptation that all contribute to the conversation on postcolonial identity. In each chapter, an author or filmmaker struggles with their identity as a French citizen descended from former colonies. This identity struggle affects how they interact with pillars of French culture, such as la paysanne, Les misérables by Victor Hugo, and les valeurs répulicaines. Thus, when they adapt their work, they reimagine the source material while exposing these apprehensions. The implications of this work are two-fold: first, it contributes to studies that expand the definition of adaptation. Second, it broadens conversations on identity and postcolonialism in twenty-first century literature and film. Chapter One examines the adaptation of la femme révoltée in George Sand's La petite Fadette (1849) and Faïza Guène's Kiffe kiffe demain (2004). Chapter Two analyzes adaptation through inspiration in Ladj Ly's film Les misérables (2019). Instead of being a direct adaptation, this film relies on cultural knowledge to create remixes of Victor Hugo's Les misérables (1862). Chapter Three wrestles with adaptation of source material in Leila Slimani's Sexe et mensonges and Paroles d'honneur (both 2017). These works, released at the same time, are based on the same series of interviews yet reproduced in two different media. Each chapter uses a different framework to address its adaptation. Chapters One and Two see adaptations in race and ethnicity, and Chapter Three examines the transmediterrean tensions between the author, her subjects, and her readers. In other words, all of these adaptations address postcolonial issues, simply by the nature of what they adapt. Location also unites these six works, as place and origin frame the characters, genre, and critical response. Therefore, this dissertation provides three case studies of an expanded definition of the adaptation in a twenty-first century postcolonial context.
