초록/해제
요약This dissertation examines how 'invention' emerged as a scientific concept and governmental concern in the United States from the late eighteenth to mid-twentieth century. Drawing on records concerning the US Patent Office, Bureau of Ethnology, Smithsonian Institution and federal planning committees, it traces how invention was taken up as a legal category and then appropriated by social scientists as a mechanism for cultural development and social change. The study unfolds across three institutional contexts. First, it analyzes how the early and mid-nineteenth century US Patent Office elaborated invention as a precise legal concept through particular administrative practices, particularly the use of paper specifications and their organization in a public archive. Second, it examines how federal ethnologists at the Smithsonian Institution and Bureau of Ethnology appropriated representational and interpretive practices to frame Native American artifacts as "inventions," incorporating them into evolutionary accounts of cultural development. Third, it explores how sociologists and economists in interwar planning committees reconceptualized invention as a source of social "maladjustment," developing new statistical approaches to measure rates of technological change and predict its disruptive effects. The dissertation argues that these scientific elaborations of invention constituted distinct modes of "organizing the future" - that is, they helped to order and govern human creativity by defining which forms merit scientific recognition and legal protection. By tracking the concept of 'invention' across patenting, ethnology, sociology, and economics, the study reveals how invention became central to modern narratives of technological progress while embedding particular assumptions about creativity, development, and cultural difference. This history illuminates the origins of contemporary frameworks for understanding technological change and innovation, showing how nineteenth-century legal and ethnological categories continue to shape discussions of creativity, intellectual property, and economic development.
