초록/해제
요약This dissertation explores two topics that have not been linked before: Susanne Langer's theory of art, as developed in Feeling and Form, and select modern and postmodern three-dimensional visual artforms. It is divided into two parts. The first part provides an exposition, interpretation, and critical reconstruction of Langer's theory, with a particular focus on her account of visual art. The second part extends Langer's theory by developing Langerian accounts of Kinetic Sculpture, Minimalist Sculpture, and Installation art. For each artform, I draw on both art-theoretical and philosophical resources to identify and analyse its defining features, argue that it is an individual artform distinct from others, and finally construct a Langerian account of it by detailing the peculiar mode of virtual space that constitutes its primary creation. The dissertation's central contribution is a unified account of visual artistic representation and expression that spans a range of artworks, from paintings to installations. It contributes to the resurgence of interest in Langer's work and demonstrates how analytic aesthetics can engage productively with adjacent humanistic disciplines, including art history, theory, criticism, and fine art.
