- 요약The subject of this dissertation concerns the economic choices of owners connected with the administration of their teams. Owners make claims about the impact of public spending on team revenues, payrolls, and eventually team quality. Economic choices by ownership have received only light treatment in the literature. According to these owner claims, after the subsidy, team revenues, payrolls, and team quality should increase. This dissertation examines these claims empirically, analyzing the impact of public spending on team revenues, payrolls, and team quality for owners receiving public funds for new stadiums, compared to owners that do not build new stadiums. The research is restricted primarily to Major League Baseball, with supporting literature in other North American sports. The empirical specification in this dissertation follows the evolution in econometric modeling designed to capture spending impacts on owner choices over time. This paper is an improvement on current writings as it compares a variety of Unconditional Analysis (UA), Ordinary Least Squares with Two Way Fixed Effects (TWFE) and Difference in Difference (DiD) methods in finding the true effect of new venue investment on the variables tested, charts the comparative results and informs the reader about the differences. In addition to attendance, the predominant focus in past literature, the dissertation also examines the impact of public stadium spending on revenues, payroll, and team quality. The overwhelming majority of the work on new stadium effects has been performed using OLS with TWFE techniques that have inherent complications as they relate to analysis requiring heterogeneity and differing treatment timing. The design in this dissertation moves beyond that with DiD. TWFE generally predicts new stadium effects of a longer duration, showing sustained higher coefficient values and higher statistical significance levels in the regression for the event-time variables as compared to DiD methods. The total expected attendance increase at the new stadium over a 15-year construction + novelty period is about 9M fan visits. A conservative Present Value estimate of the total expected attendance-related revenue increase attributable to the new stadium over the 7-year novelty period is about $20M. A conservative Present Value estimate of the expected increase in all revenues attributable to the new stadium over the 11-year novelty period is about $183M. There has been much less attention in the literature on new venue effects tied to payroll and team quality than to attendance and revenue. A conservative Present Value estimate of the total expected Team Payroll increase attributable to the new stadium over the 11-year novelty period is about $22M. Wins should increase by 16-33 franchise Wins (2 to 3 Wins per season) over the 11-Year novelty period. This is reflected by a Win% increase of between 10 and 20 percentage points.
