- 요약Extant research explores different dimensions of acculturation (skills, social integration, traditions, norms/values, and feelings of loss) and demonstrates how discrimination affects refugees leading to maladaptation and mental health issues which hinders adaptation to a new culture. People with disabilities can suffer from receiving low quality and quantity of services. This neglect results from omission by the state. Newcomers adapt to culture over time, but racism among social workers and a lack of anti-racist perspectives is concerning, given their role in integration policies. Other displacement-stressors correlate with harmful drug use by newcomers. Existing systems may not effectively serve patients, emphasizing the need for mutual learning and adaptation in the medical model. Integrated individuals had lower stress, depression, and self-esteem than assimilated individuals, posing challenges to acculturation and effective mental health provision. Language acquisition has a deep impact on cultural adaptation. Public policies and resources are needed to address newcomers' needs, including housing in high-quality neighborhoods, and to facilitate cultural adjustments and minimize acculturative stress among immigrants. When public policies force migrants to utilize nontraditional receiving sites, they exhibit compromised mental health compared to the general population. Acculturation status varies among migrant groups; some newcomers maintain their traditions for an extended time. Higher cultural adaptation is associated with less need for care, lower symptom levels, and a higher quality of life.Theories: I used the following theories: 1) Michael Cernea's population displacement & resettlement model focuses on social justice in forced displacement, emphasizing comprehensive programs that benefit displaced populations and host communities. 2) Norman Garmezy's resilience theory explores adaptation to challenges, informing support systems for refugees. 3) Kim Yung Kim's cross-cultural adaptation theory examines psychological and sociocultural challenges navigating new cultural landscapes. 4) Cultural Adaptation theory which explores how individuals and groups adjust to new cultural environments.Research Questions: 1) What are the challenges Arab refugees with and without disabilities face in adapting to life in the US? 2) What coping strategies do they use to adapt to the US? 3) How do they describe their overall well-being and sense of belonging? and 4) How do the challenges and coping strategies influence their sense of well-being and belonging? Methods: This was a two-phase qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews. It incorporated a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach and used community collaboration to generate a convenience sample followed by snowball sampling. The sample includes men and women Arab refugees with and without physical disabilities aged 18+ of diverse nationalities. Refugees living in the United States more than 15 years were excluded because they will have adapted to new systems, new routines, and will have increased English language proficiency. Phase 1 included 10 participants of refugees with disabilities. Phase 2 added 8 additional participants between 18-65 years of age, who are Arab refugees without disabilities and who have been in the United States between 10-15 years. This study used narrative analysis to seek answers regarding refugees' experiences with social services in their new home country. To ensure a rigorous coding process, Mustafa Rfat of Washington University at St. Louis, reviewed it. I maintained an audit trail throughout my dissertation process. Additionally, I declared any biases that emerge throughout the process, to better understand the complex needs of RWD and inform policy recommendations to improve support services and integration programs for this vulnerable population.Expected Contribution: This study will contribute to social workers' knowledge of the acculturation process for Arab refugees with disabilities and understanding of how social services either help or hinder the acculturation process. The study will offer suggestions for improving service provision and service accessibility for refugees with disabilities.
