- 요약Commodity plastics, especially high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and isotactic polypropylene (iPP) have played a vital role in modern society. Despite the low cost, light-weight, and convenience of these plastic products, they pose a severe threat to the ecology system due to the leakage to the environment. The recycling rate for HDPE and iPP have been low due to the difficulty in sorting from waste plastic stream, and the mechanical properties of the co-melted blend have little practical value due to the immiscibility of these plastics. This dissertation aims to address the problem by developing additives, also known as non-reactive compatibilizers that can improve the mechanical properties of HDPE/iPP blends. This Dissertation contains the following three chapters:Chapter 1 serves as an introduction which describes the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of HDPE, iPP, LDPE and blends. It also summarizes the major work that has been done in the field of non-reactive compatibilization.Chapter 2 describes the synthesis of PE/iPP graft copolymers (GCP) and their application as compatibilizers. GCPs of different molecular weights, graft densities, and graft lengths were synthesized. The compatibilization efficacies of these GCPs were evaluated by testing mechanical and morphological properties of the blends. This work was done in collaboration with the Bates group and Ellison group at University of Minnesota.Chapter 3 describes the synthesis of iPP-P(P-co-E)-PE copolymers and their application as compatibilizers. Such copolymers of different block sizes and tapered regions were synthesized. The compatibilization efficacies of these copolymers were evaluated by testing mechanical the blends. HDPE/iPP blends of a wide range of compositions were also explored. An appendix, which describes some optimization of living polymerization conditions with a pyridoamidohafnium catalyst, was included in the end of this Dissertation.
