초록/해제
요약African-American families in the United States are framed as monolingual ecosystems and the intergenerational dynamics of their languaging have gone under-explored. Additionally, a majority of studies assess the family's language practices against the backdrop of schooling as the standard and a focus on interactions between parents and children, which has left a noticeable gap in the research literature. This inquiry, using the methodology of a critical sprachenportrait-ethnographic case study, explored the ways African-American families use languages and literacies across multiple generations. With a nine-member family consisting of three generations, referred to as "The Family," the following research questions guided this inquiry: (a) In what ways have African-American family members practiced languages and literacies across generations? (b) How do African-American families negotiate identity in the midst of intergenerational language and literacy practices? Sprachenportraits, also known as language silhouettes, are a "multi-modal, biographical approach" (Busch, 2012, p. 1) that presupposes the existence of a verbal repertoire (Gumperz, 1964) and is designed to explore "linguistic diversity" by eliciting two types of data: visual and narrative (Busch, 2012; Martin, 2011). Sprachenportraits facilitated the documentation of visual and verbal data on participants' linguistic identities and the ethnographic dimension supported the identification of a culture of language and literacies taking place in the Family intergenerationally. For the purposes of this dissertation, spracheportrait data serve as the focal data for exploring linguistic identity in the Family. Data analysis indicated all generations practice a form of multilingualism that reflects intergenerational transmission of values around language and literacy practices; the ways they enact their languages and literacies also vary from the youngest to the oldest generations. Implications include (a) future exploration of a Black Family Language (BFL) construct, which could provide researchers a new vehicle through which to study and better understand the Black family as a languaging entity and the warrant to explore the presence of a language policy in Black families.
