- 요약Chinese traditional instruments are inseparable from Chinese history and culture, and are usually performed solo or as an ensemble. For centuries, traditional tunes have been passed down orally across generations, and only started to be notated since the early 20th century. Erhu, guzheng, pipa, di, and xiao are among the most commonly known instruments. Suona on the other hand, an iconic Chinese double reed instrument, remains relatively obscure outside of China and receives limited scholarly attention. Settings of traditional tunes are usually further transcribed from orchestrated works into works with piano reductions for concert purposes. As of August 2024, there are no internationally recognized compositions written originally and idiomatically for suona and piano as a collective unit with equal partnerships. Therefore, I have partnered up with composer/suona performer Kwan Leung Ling and the Department of Composition, Music Theory and Musicology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory under the guidance and supervision of the internationally renowned Chinese-American composer Dr. Chen Yi, to commission new works specifically designed for this instrumentation. Through the effort of this project, I hope to raise awareness and understanding of the instrument suona, to broaden the musical horizon, to enrich the repertoire, and to inspire future musicians to seek new sounds, new expression, and new possibilities.
