- 요약The University of North Texas (UNT) Wind Studies has long-provided a music laboratory environment that has helped propel and develop the wind ensemble (and its repertoire) to a relevant and internationally recognized performance medium. Due to the nature and importance of this program in the context of performance and education, a comprehensive telling of the earliest history is needed. This document outlines this period of the UNT Wind Studies history (1909-1945), which includes the earliest records of the program at the University as a Teachers College through the first half of the twentieth century. The approach includes a chronology of the earliest years of its inception using available concert programs published in various contemporary publications; a collection and analysis of a variety of data points including repertoire choices, guest artists, conductors, composers and performers; highlights of significant events and accounts of various stakeholders involved at the university and in the community; and finally, analyzing significant legislative, financial cultural, and societal shifts at the time which may have impacted the trajectory and decision related to the growth and cultivation of the program. A variety of resources have been compiled, and this document unifies these into a synthesized narrative. Each section is dedicated to a specific era of historical significance following the timeline of historical context and changes in band leadership. Understanding the historical factors, environment, leaders, events, and influences which led to the development of an internationally recognized and established wind band program is a vital step in sustaining the viability, progress and continued evolution of the medium and its stakeholders-including musicians, conductor, composers, and audiences. These materials serve as an important sampling of this history that are both accessible and useful to the current and future stakeholders of wind ensemble performance. This document provides an overview of the earliest data of the Wind Studies program at UNT. Several more levels of connection to the modern program are needed to complete a comprehensive study. This research is focused on the most distant events chronologically, but provides a framework which will allow a closer look at the progress of the last half of the twentieth century as well as the twenty-first century, which has seen a substantially higher amount of output in terms of performances and recordings.
