초록/해제
요약The structure of Mahler's Eighth Symphony understandably causes disagreements among prominent analysts. Set in only two large-scale movements, or parts, it is one of the most structurally unique symphonies in Mahler's output. While many analysts come to an agreement on the form of the first part relating to sonata form, the colossal scale of Part II poses a greater challenge. Since Part II occupies nearly sixty minutes of an eighty-minute performance and accounts for 1,572 of the 2,152 total measures, the difficulty of comprehending this vast structure is tenable. Even with the large proportions, most analysts only briefly address structure and form in as little as a sentence or two. The purpose of this study is to find structural patterns in the movement with the possibility of relating to conventional forms. Finding formal clarity in such an ambiguously structured piece helps enable more informed and secure performances with a stronger sense of musical direction. In addition to aiding performances, these ideas on the structure will contribute to others' analyses of the piece in either countering the findings or contributing to them. Since many analysts do not address Part II of Mahler's Eighth Symphony, this analysis may help to encourage a more thorough approach from established theorists and authors.
