■520    ▼aThe  objective  of  the  present  study  is  to  analyze  the  historical  evolution  and  sociolinguistic  variation  of  second-person  singular  preterite  verb  endings  in  Spanish,  specifically,  the  coexistence  of  the  verb  endings  -aste/-iste  (without-s),  considered  the  standard  forms,  and  -  astes/-istes  (with-s),  non-standard  variants  that  include  an  additional  -s  not  present  in  the  prescriptively  recognized  verb  paradigm.  Combining  quantitative  and  qualitative  methodologies,  the  study  traces  this  morphosyntactic  variation  across  five  centuries  and  three  historical  periods:  the  Edad  Media  (Middle  Ages),  the  Siglo  de  Oro  (Spanish  Golden  Age),  and  the  Epoca  Contemporanea  (Contemporary  Era).  The  investigation  analyzed  13,059  tokens  from  historical  corpora  (CORDE  and  CORDIAM)  and  20  grammar  books  published  between  the  15th  and  21st  centuries  to  examine  linguistic  and  extralinguistic  factors,  including  verb  frequency,  verb  type  frequency,  phonological  context,  geographic  region,  topic,  and  pronoun  use.This  study  fills  a  gap  in  the  literature,  as  no  systematic  diachronic  variationist  study  of  these  verb  forms  has  been  conducted  to  date.  Using  a  sociolinguistic  approach  (Poplack  &  Malvar,  2007;  Poplack  &  Dion,  2009;  Poplack  et  al.,  2015),  the  analysis  challenges  the  prescriptive  notion  that  with-s  forms  (e.g.,  fuistes,  comistes)  are  erroneous  or  recent.  Instead,  it  reframes  them  as  historically  retained  variants  that  have  persisted  in  specific  verbs  due  to  limited  exposure  to  standardization.  The  findings  show  that  with-s  variants  are  linked  to  older  stages  of  the  language  and  to  contact  ecologies  and  social  identity  markers  in  specific  regions.The  study  also  examines  the  intersection  between  verb  conjugation  and  form  of  address  (tu,  vos,  vuestra  merced  "you-singular"  and  vosotros  "you-plural"),  demonstrating  that  changes  in  verbal  morphology  correlate  with  shifts  in  politeness  strategies  and  sociopragmatic  dynamics.This  dissertation  provides  new  insights  into  the  sociolinguistic  construction  of  linguistic  authority  and  the  ideological  tensions  between  prescriptive  norms  and  actual  usage.  It  promotes  a  more  inclusive  approach  in  Spanish  language  teaching  by  recognizing  historical  variation  as  legitimate,  helping  learners  develop  a  more  authentic  and  confident  linguistic  identity.
