- 요약This dissertation investigates the expressive and structural functions of lyric forms in the operas of Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835), offering a new analytical model that integrates musical formal functions with operatic text setting. Challenging longstanding narratives that dismiss primo ottocento opera as dramatically disengaged or formally static, I argue that Bellini's lyric forms-typically associated with schematized designs-are in fact dynamic, text-sensitive structures that play a central role in articulating operatic drama.Building on the form-functional theory of William Caplin (1998), I propose that Bellini's musical phrases articulate initiating, medial, and concluding functions that align closely with the semantic and syntactic organization of poetic strophes. This model treats lyric form not as a fixed prototype (e.g., AABA) but as a family of flexible archetypes that coordinate text and music at multiple structural levels. Across four analytical chapters, I explore the interdependent roles of harmony, meter, form, and poetic structure in shaping these forms. Chapter 2 maps typical harmonic schemata onto the poetic distich, showing how cadential and prolongational progressions articulate internal poetic divisions. Chapter 3 examines Bellini's manipulation of hypermeter-especially through what I term Pre-Thematic Accompaniment Vamps (PTAVs)-to establish, displace, or obscure metrical expectations in ways that shape dramatic perception. Chapter 4 develops an "Italian Formenlehre" that traces how Caplin's formal functions manifest in Bellini's settings of closed numbers, resulting in thematic configurations that resemble those of the Classical era. Chapter 5 focuses on the shaping of lyric form by poetic structure, demonstrating how strophic variation drives musical form in Bellini's settings of ottave, sestine, quartine, and other verse types.Drawing on close readings of Bellini's operas composed between Il pirata (1827) and I puritani (1835), I argue that his collaboration with librettist Felice Romani produced a dramaturgical idiom in which music and text are not merely aligned, but co-constitutive. In doing so, this dissertation recasts lyric form as a musico-dramatic phenomenon, showing how operatic conventions serve as vehicles for heightened expression, formal clarity, and dramatic intensity.
