초록/해제
요약This dissertation project focuses on Indigenous and Latine Young People's embodiment and experiences in mathematics across spaces, including home, community, and school. This study uplifts the experiences and explores how youth, as a collective, advocate for social action. In the classroom space and schooling writ large, the experiences of Students of Color often get overlooked and disregarded. This dissertation project offers a counterstory, as a form of resistance to center the voices and experiences of Brown Children through youth-engaged research. Through the use of a Chicana/Feminista Theoretical Foundation, I created an Ancestral Interconnectedness Conceptual Framework for this work. In addition to the theoretical and conceptual frameworks, I combine critical ethnography, photovoice, and platica methodology to form the research methods in an interdisciplinary mathematics education research approach that centers Indigenous epistemologies. I use ethnographic methods (observations, field notes), photovoice (focus groups, exhibitions, photos, narratives), and critical ethnographic analysis (analytic memos, interpretive coding, member checking) to explore how youth name, experience, and perform math. Through a critical interdisciplinary approach, this study explores the experience and embodiment, or the doings of mathematics, of five Mexican youth. The specific research questions I answer are: RQ 1) How do Indigenous and Latine Youth experience or embody (Tatocaxtiliztli or Quennipiatic) mathematics through their lived experiences? Sub RQ 1) What different processes are levied by the youth when engaged with math? Sub RQ 2) What are the characteristics of some of the main activities that were embodied? Sub RQ 3) What people, places (e.g., home, school, community), and moments of time were discussed during the platicas? RQ 2) In what way is their experience connected to Indigenous and Latine cultural epistemologies and everyday culture? To answer these two questions, I utilize data collected, such as recorded platicas (group conversations), photos, narrative, and math course observations and recordings, and surveys, which are analyzed through thematic analysis through open and axial coding of Spanish transcriptions, later translated to write up the analysis and findings of this work.
