- 요약This dissertation consists of three standalone chapters, each examining how human systems develop under the influence of the natural environment. Each chapter considers an emergent phenomenon of human systems by asking a fundamental question of spatial causality: Why did it happen here? Chapter 1 traces the political economy of forest management in the state of Oregon, investigating why catastrophic wildfires have become frequent and considering if a history of clearcutting impacts the risk of fire today. Chapter 2 focuses on a single period of extraordinary weather in Oregon that stress tested the entire forest system, and investigates whether prior U.S. Forest Service fuel treatments distinguish the small number of fires that escaped containment from the vast majority that did not. Chapter 3 analyzes the emergence of markets in the premodern world, testing Adam Smith's hypotheses about how environmental constraints dictated where economic activity was most likely to develop. Taken together, these chapters offer novel approaches to understanding the complex interaction between human and natural systems.
