■520    ▼aThe  present  dissertation  investigates  the  psychological  factors  underlying  fertility  intentions  and  parental  adjustment  during  the  transition  to  parenthood  in  contemporary  China.  Grounded  in  the  Theory  of  Planned  Behavior,  the  research  aims  to  fill  critical  gaps  in  understanding  motivational  and  relational  factors  that  influence  childbearing  decisions,  particularly  in  a  rapidly  changing  sociocultural  context.  The  project  comprises  two  empirical  studies.  The  first  paper  introduces  the  Prospective  Parenthood  Questionnaire  (PPQ),  a  multidimensional  instrument  developed  to  measure  Anticipation/Excitement  about  Parenthood,  External  Pressure  to  Have  Children,  and  Confidence  in  Parenting.  Across  three  studies  involving  individuals  at  different  stages  of  parenthood,  the  PPQ  demonstrated  robust  psychometric  properties  and  revealed  significant  gender  differences  in  fertility  motivations.  The  second  paper  utilizes  dyadic  data  from  117  Chinese  couples  expecting  their  first  child  to  explore  the  interaction  between  attachment  representations  and  gender  ideology  during  the  transition  to  parenthood.  Employing  the  Actor-Partner  Interdependence  Model,  findings  highlight  the  impact  of  attachment  security,  adherence  to  patriarchal  gender  ideology  and  their  interaction  on  couples'  perception  of  the  prospective  parenthood,  and  postpartum  psychological  adjustment.  Gender  differences  were  detected,  as  well  as  dyadic  effects.  Together,  these  studies  offer  theoretical  and  empirical  contributions  to  research  on  the  transition  to  parenthood,  emphasizing  the  interplay  of  cultural,  relational,  and  individual  factors  in  shaping  reproductive  behavior.  The  dissertation  provides  implications  for  family  policy,  mental  health  support,  and  gender  equity  in  parenting  roles.
