초록/해제
요약This study explores how acting can enhance second language acquisition by observing and interviewing two instructors teaching Acting I to intermediate ESL students at an urban community college, as well as conducting interviews with the students themselves to gather insights into their experiences and progress. The course was divided into two sections, one conducted in-person and the other online, synchronous. The semester-long observation allowed for a detailed comparison of the two groups, highlighting strengths, challenges, and the overall impact on students' language acquisition. As part of the research, an ethnodrama was created using verbatim transcripts from participant interviews, crafted to reflect the comprehensive experiences of the two groups. The analysis is presented narratively, identifying themes, quoting participant insights, and evaluating the teaching strategies employed. Findings demonstrated that acting for ESL courses can significantly benefit students by enhancing oral language skills, building confidence, and fostering cultural and personal connections. Key elements included translanguaging, culturally responsive teaching, and performance-based tasks, which offered a dynamic complement to traditional ESL instruction. Both groups engaged in creative writing activities, encouraging critical thinking and authentic language use. Group A incorporated collaborative tasks like peer correction to refine dramatic writing, while Group B focused on individual activities such as monologue writing. The study found that collaborative approaches in Group A enriched the learning process by encouraging interaction and shared insights, whereas Group B could have benefited from similar techniques to deepen understanding and engagement. This research underscores the value of including creative methodologies like acting and playwriting. The findings suggest that these approaches not only improve language proficiency, but also provide a holistic learning experience that respects and incorporates students' diverse cultural backgrounds. Ultimately, the study advocates for the continued integration of performance-based pedagogy in ESL programs, promoting a meaningful, engaging, and student-centered approach to language learning.
