- 요약Grasslands can have higher levels of biodiversity than other temperate ecosystems, but the mechanisms underlying this have been altered worldwide, which makes restoring grasslands especially challenging. Pollinators may play a role in restoring this biodiversity, and in turn, the restoration of perennial forbs (the wildflowers of prairie) may positively influence pollinator activity. We performed experiments in prairie restorations to test these ideas. In the second chapter, we tested the effect of exotic versus native forb species on pollinator visitation in a young prairie restoration. Our results showed that exotic forb species had extended flowering phenology and were visited more by pollinators. In the third chapter, we hypothesized that extended flowering phenology in restorations results from their seeding with low grass/forb ratios and additions of early and late-flowering forbs. Results showed that prairie restorations produced flowers for longer periods when sown with intermediate grass/forb ratios or when early- and late-flowering forbs recruit more readily. In the fourth chapter, we hypothesized that prairie restorations sown with intermediate grass/forb ratios provide multiple ecosystem services compared to those sown with low or high grass/forb ratios. Results supported that optimal ecosystem service provision, including pollination services, occurs in prairies sown with intermediate grass/forb ratios. In the fifth chapter, we hypothesized that plant biodiversity of prairie patches will be lower when excluded from pollinators and will be higher when pollen is added to animal-pollinated forbs. Results showed that excluding pollinators lowers the biodiversity of plant communities following assembly. These findings indicate that plant biodiversity is limited by pollinators and plant species that increase floral resource availability positively affect pollinator activity. Restoring pollinator habitat will be best achieved with emphasis on seed mix diversity as compared to increasing forb density in tallgrass prairies. Restorations sown with intermediate grass/forb ratios will be most likely to recover the biodiversity of prairie and support multiple ecosystem services.
