■520    ▼aMuch  of  today's  pop  culture  landscape  is  shaped  by  the  long-lasting  imagery  of  the  Middle  Ages.  The  very  popularity  of  shows  like  Game  of  Thrones  and  the  Table  Top  Roleplay  Game  Dungeons  &  Dragons  demonstrate  that  imagery  associated  with  the  Middle  Ages  is  near  omnipresent  even  today.  The  reason  for  this  is  largely  due  to  the  skillful  use  of  memetic  imagery  that  religious  writers  employed  in  the  Middle  Ages.  This  project  focuses  on  how  memetic  imagery  was  used  to  build  and  maintain  Christian  ideologies  important  for  cultural  and  social  hierarchy.  Although  it  is  not  new  to  identify  the  presence  and  use  of  memetic  imagery  in  medieval  religious  texts,  this  project  defines  the  specific  avenues  and  human  experiences  which  make  this  such  an  effective  tool.  In  order  to  truly  maintain  ideological  norms  through  religious  writing,  memetic  imagery  touches  upon  three  base  human  experiences:  emotional  community  norms,  senses  of  space  and  place,  and  senses  associated  with  the  body.Although  the  memetic  images  in  religious  writing  are  used  intentionally  as  a  shorthand  by  the  writer  to  reinforce  narratives  already  known  by  the  audience,  or  to  inspire  the  audience  to  read  further,  I  argue  that  the  reason  for  the  effectiveness  of  this  tool  must  be  attributed  to  the  three  avenues  outlined  above  which  are  used  subconsciously  to  great  success.  It  is  the  very  fact  that  these  are  subconsciously  used  that  prove  their  necessity.  In  Judgment  Day  II,  The  Writings  of  Julian  of  Norwich,  and  The  Desert  of  Religion,  it  can  be  seen  how  the  authors  of  each  text  unintentionally  access  each  of  these  three  areas  through  the  process  of  using  shorthand  memetic  ideas.  It  is  the  power  of  these  images  and  the  inherent  connection  created  by  the  emotionality,  sense  of  place,  and  bodily  senses  that  the  ideas  of  the  Middle  Ages  were  so  successful  in  establishing  ideological  norms.
