- 요약Introduction: Trust in experts is a predictor of engagement and implementation of expert guidance by the public. However, some believe that trust in experts is declining. Indeed, there is evidence that trust in scientists has declined since the COVID-19 pandemic; although, not equally among all U.S. adults. Complicating the matter, the rise of social media has given platforms to non-experts to share their ideas, especially in the areas of food and nutrition. The presented studies will explore how agriculture and food related sciences (termed Agri-Food-Related Sciences) are trusted by U.S. adults and how Iowa dietitians perceive and build trust in the field of dietetics.Methods: Chapter 3 consisted of two online surveys of U.S. adults (n = 802) from the fall of 2023 and 2024. Trust in science (1 = strongly distrust, 5 = strongly trust) and political ideology (1 = extremely conservative, 7 = extremely liberal) were measured using Likert-scales. Associations between trust in science and political ideology, when controlling relevant demographic variables, were measured using ordinary least squares regression. Chapters 4 and 5 were two qualitative studies of Iowa dietitians exploring their perceptions of and strategies to build trust in the field of dietetics. Data were collected through an in-person community forum (n = 66) and virtual semi-structured interviews (n = 17). Themes were found using inductive thematic analysis. Results: Data from the surveys suggests that while U.S. adults were fairly trusting in science overall, they tended to be less trusting in Agri-Food-Related Sciences (3.58 + 0.87) compared to sciences that are not related to agriculture or food (3.79 + 0.81). Further, conservatives are significantly less trusting in Agi-Food-Related Sciences than liberals (Adjusted R 2 = 0.26; p-value 0.001, F(10, 362) = 14.03). Regardless of political ideology, U.S. adults were the least trusting in Agri-Food-Related Sciences that focused on production. Data from qualitative studies highlights that Iowa dietitians do not feel widely distrusted but rather feel that their role and expertise are misunderstood and services and knowledge are underutilized. As such, dietitians relied on clarifying their role and education, providing clear recommendations, creating safe and welcoming spaces, and collaborating with teams to demonstrate their trustworthiness. Discussion and Conclusions: Although trust in scientists and dietitians is somewhat high, scientists and dietitians should engage in strong communication, community outreach, and policy reform to maintain and build perceptions of trustworthiness. Scientists working within the agri-food system that prioritize production should consider communicating their commitment to the public's best interests. Dietitian and dietetic organizations should continue counteracting misconceptions regarding dietitians' roles and education and addressing barriers of accessibility.
