요약The Potentilla breweri complex (Rosaceae: Potentilleae), a taxonomically difficult sky-island group from the Great Basin, Sierra Nevada, and northern Rocky Mountains, is examined from natural history, molecular-phylogenetic, and taxonomic angles in search of better insight on its obscure and fascinating evolutionary dynamics. This integrative perspective brings together extensive field observation, a nine-year ongoing common garden experiment, extensive morphological and taxonomic examination, ecological niche modeling, genome size measurement, phylogenomics, phylogeography, network phylogeny, and multiple new taxon descriptions.In the Introduction, the study group is introduced and previous work on it is summarized, including its model role in pioneering biosystematics and its wide range of interesting features. The author's species concept and the significance of these particular plants are also described.Chapter 1 reports natural-history observations of the P. breweri complex's morphology, ecology, and cytology. It discusses the details of morphology and habitat, including preliminary morphometric results and ecological niche modeling, and reports the results of DNA content measurements and a long-running common garden experiment. Its findings depict a Pleistocene plant group surviving in post-glacial refugia among the scattered high mountain meadows of the Great Basin and Pacific cordillera.Chapter 2 examines the complex's molecular phylogeny via Sanger, anchored phylogenomic, and GBS sequencing. Maximum-likelihood trees, implicit networks, population genetic statistics, fossil-calibrated dating, and ancestral area reconstruction reveal both marked taxonomic-phylogenetic cohesion and extensive discordance consistent with a long history of hybridization among exceptionally long-lived plants, with numerous genotypes dating back well over 10,000 years.Finally, Chapter 3 distills the previous findings into taxonomic publications: two published taxon descriptions, one published re-circumscription, and drafts of two more taxon descriptions to be published in the near future.
