- 요약The contemporary art world, rooted in the shift from a centralized Academic system to a dealer-critic system in 19th-century France, has maintained a durable form to the present day. Focusing on the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period that featured an extraordinary amount of protest and dissent internal to the art world, this dissertation explores how the art world has maintained resilience in the face of such discord. Using archival materials from curators, critics, dealers, museums, and artists, this dissertation finds that a decentralized system of recognition and review coupled with a commitment by art world participants to the idea that good art exists and is knowable undergirds much of the conflict within the art world while also creating release valves and stabilizing mechanisms for conflict. Specifically, the competition over having work recognized as good drives protest and discontent but also drives the creation of new styles, diffusion of responsibility for identifying works as good, and opportunities to participate in the art world even while being excluded from recognition. Further, art world participants' commitment to recognition creates a constraint that artworks be intelligible as art so that they may be understood as part of an art lineage, which together enables the reproduction of the art world even in the face of radical critiques. These activities, then, create a propulsive drive to exhibit work that overrides concerns participants may have about the art world itself. As a result, the art world is able to manage internal discontent in a way that allows participants to continue participating in the art world and perpetuating its conventions even as they rebel against the art world as a result of exclusion from exhibitions and recognition.
