초록/해제
요약Counterpoint is traditionally conceived of as "line against line," but many composers - particularly since 1900, with some earlier precedents - have broadened this conception to involve a layering of masses, processes, composite gestures, or multiple tempi, styles, or characteristics. My research focuses on a subset of these which I have termed "block counterpoint": works consisting of multiple streams including at least two "blocks," each block heard as a composite, irreducible to a single line, capable of standing independently from one or more other blocks to a degree comparable to a voice in linear counterpoint. Such works offer composers new avenues for exploration reflective of our complex world and its multi-layered simultaneities. I examine and compare some of the various ways blocks are composed on a micro level, as well as composers' strategies for combining them without devolving into muddle or chaos. Context-dependent analytical tools are brought to bear on the works examined, from modal-tonal contrapuntal practice to set theory, analysis of a work's component elements (rhythm, timbre, density, dynamics, register, and so on), the impact of a composer's conception and formal decisions on a work's "accessibility," as well as psychological and cognitive studies' findings concerning the perception of complex auditory input.
