초록/해제
요약This dissertation investigates cultural responses to the environmental conflict surrounding tree monoculture-particularly eucalyptus plantations-in the Iberian Peninsula. By examining how trees and rural landscapes are framed as sites of extraction, the project explores contemporary cultural works across cinema, visual arts, music, and social media that engage with these ecological transformations. The first chapter provides historical and environmental context for the rise of eucalyptus in northwestern Iberia, tracing its introduction in the 19th century to its present-day dominance. It examines the ecological and socio-political impacts of plantations, and the implications for traditional human-shaped landscapes. It highlights the role of institutions in promoting timber and pulp production and analyzes scientific perspectives on the environmental issues related to eucalyptus plantations.Chapter two analyzes audiovisual representations of tree monoculture that either support or challenge the environmental implications of these landscapes. Some of the films analyzed are O que arde (2019), by Oliver Laxe, Trinta lumes (2018), by Diana Toucedo, El olivo (2016), by Iciar Bollain, Suro (2022), by Mikel Gurrea, and Alcarras (2022), by Carla Simon. By comparing eucalyptus with older, biodiverse monocultures such as cork oaks and olive trees, the chapter offers a nuanced understanding of tree-human relationships. Thus, it investigates how different forms of art challenge the human-nature divide and emphasizes the permeability of environmental conflicts across Iberia. The third chapter explores humor as a form of environmental critique. It analyzes online content, including fake stories, viral images, and musical hits. These works engage wider audiences, allowing them to position themselves within the conflict, and establish dialogue. These cultural responses not only raise awareness of tree monoculture but also provide emotional coping mechanisms, presenting alternatives to the often bleak narratives of environmental activism.Overall, the dissertation highlights the socio-environmental tensions in northwestern Iberia, shaped by rural depopulation, extractivist legacies, and idealized visions of untouched nature. By emphasizing the richness of cultural production around tree monoculture, it challenges dominant capitalist models of land use and advocates for more sustainable, reciprocal human-plant relationships. The project ultimately contributes to a growing discourse on reimagining our planetary future and rethinking humanity's role within it.
