초록/해제
요약Sexual harassment is a pervasive problem on US college campuses in that about 40% of students report ever having experienced harassment during college. Prior research examining what factors place students at greater risk of harassment has largely focused on target characteristics and the relationship between targets and harassers. However, focusing on individual- and relationship-level factors may overlook important contextual factors that are associated with risk. The purpose of the present study was to examine 1) what characteristics of harassment are associated with greater risk and extent of harassment, 2) how characteristics differed across different college contexts, and 3) whether incident-level or target-level characteristics were more important for explaining risk of harassment across locations. A total of 1,164 students, who were predominantly straight (58%), White (48%), cisgender (85%) women (50%) from 408 higher education institutions across the U.S., completed an online survey that contained a modified 10-item version of the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ; Fitzgerald et al., 1999) with items added to measure sexual orientation and racialized gender harassment in addition to unwanted sexual attention and gender harassment from the original SEQ. Students also provided follow-up information about each type of harassment they experienced (e.g., location) in addition to measures about other behaviors and demographics. Students reported 2,225 types of harassing behaviors (M = 1.92, SD = 2.20 per student) during the previous seven days and 59.8% of students reported any harassment. Using a hurdle model, being a woman (compared to men), experiencing more childhood sexual abuse, engaging in more problematic drinking behaviors, and being involved in more extracurricular activities were associated with greater risk and/or extent of experiencing harassment. Different types of harassment occurred across three common locations - housing, outside, and academic buildings on campus. Using multilevel modeling, incident and harasser characteristics as well as the relationship between harassers and targets distinguished between harassment experienced across the three tested locations more than did characteristics of the targets of harassment. That is, similar students are targeted across locations, but they experience harassment from different people and in different ways across locations. These findings can support schools as well as local, state, and federal governments in collaborative efforts to develop more comprehensive sexual harassment interventions that center and are tailored for specific contexts.
