- 요약The concept of symmetry plays an important role across multiple areas of chemistry, yet little is known about how students think about molecular symmetry. I developed a flexible methodology that supports diverse participant communication (including gesture, pointing, and model manipulation) while capturing rich multimodal data. Using this approach, I applied a Knowledge-in-Pieces lens to analyze strategies students used when reasoning about molecular symmetry in a card-sorting interview. Findings show that students used a wide variety of strategies, many beyond mental visualization, and reveal how students coordinate conceptual and procedural knowledge in real time. Additionally, by analyzing students' similarity judgements while sorting, we found that undergraduate students taking inorganic chemistry courses made most of their sorting decisions based on their conceptual understanding of symmetry rather than on their initial perceptions of superficial molecule traits. These findings offer new insight into the reasoning processes underlying symmetry judgments and suggest opportunities for instruction that validates and builds on students' varied approaches.
