■520    ▼aThroughout  history,  communities  have  sought  to  dominate  one  another,  through  forms  of  oppression,  often  by  limiting  the  expression  of  one's  culture  and  heritage.  Rather  than  continue  this  endless  loop,  I  argue  that  we  should  use  music  to  build  bridges  between  cultures  and  communities,  allowing  for  engagement,  empathy,  and  understanding.  In  the  American  Southwest,  at  Arizona  State  University,  a  contact  zone  between  Mariachi  and  Barbershop  was  created  with  these  goals  in  mind.  In  this  paper  I  explore  the  historical  significance  of  Mariachi  and  Barbershop,  considering  their  origins,  global  proliferation  and  missed  opportunities  at  collaboration.  Additionally,  I  analyze  four  musical  works  performed  in  collaboration,  demonstrating  the  points  of  connection  between  these  two  distinct  musical  styles.  In  the  final  chapter,  I  offer  practical  tips  and  rehearsal  techniques  when  preparing  an  ensemble  within  the  context  of  this  music.  The  aim  of  this  research  and  performance  is  to  consider  how  we  engage  different  cultures,  not  to  suppress,  but  instead  to  elevate,  to  find  common  ground,  and  to  work  together  in  harmony.
■520    ▼alo  largo  de  la  historia,  las  comunidades  han  buscado  dominar  unas  a  otras  mediante  diversas  formas  de  opresion,  a  menudo  limitando  la  expresion  de  la  cultura  y  la  herencia  de  los  demas.  En  lugar  de  continuar  con  este  ciclo  interminable,  sostengo  que  debemos  usar  la  musica  para  construir  puentes  entre  culturas  y  comunidades,  permitiendo  la  participacion,  la  empatia  y  la  comprension.  En  el  suroeste  de  los  Estados  Unidos,  en  la  Universidad  Estatal  de  Arizona,  se  creo  una  zona  de  contacto  entre  el  mariachi  y  el  barbershop  con  estos  objetivos  en  mente.            En  este  trabajo  exploro  la  importancia  historica  del  mariachi  y  el  barbershop,  considerando  sus  origenes,  su  proliferacion  global  y  las  oportunidades  perdidas  de  colaboracion.  Ademas,  analizo  cuatro  obras  musicales  interpretadas  en  colaboracion,  demostrando  los  puntos  de  conexion  entre  estos  dos  estilos  musicales  distintos.  En  el  capitulo  final,  ofrezco  consejos  practicos  y  tecnicas  de  ensayo  para  preparar  un  conjunto  dentro  del  contexto  de  esta  musica.  El  objetivo  de  esta  investigacion  y  presentacion  es  reflexionar  sobre  como  interactuamos  con  diferentes  culturas,  no  para  suprimirlas,  sino  para  elevarlas,  encontrar  puntos  en  comun  y  trabajar  juntos  en  armonia.
