초록/해제
요약In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts (Music Performance: Piano Pedagogy and Performance) at the University of Michigan, I completed two dissertation recitals and one pedagogical workshop. The lecture recital and solo recital featured a range of piano repertoire, while the workshop introduced my research thesis, exploring the past, present, and future of piano master classes. This workshop presentation incorporated findings from surveys distributed to the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD), and the broader Ann Arbor community. The lecture recital took place on Saturday, February 10, 2024 (Lunar New Year), in Britton Recital Hall. The lecture topic, "Chinese Folk and Traditional Music for Piano in the late 1970s" was paired with performances of Tan Dun's 8 Memories in Watercolor, op. 1 (1978), and Wang Jian-Zhong's 1975 arrangement of the Chinese folk orchestral piece, Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon. I chose these pieces to showcase two different types of piano compositions based on traditional Chinese and folk music at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976. The lecture discusses the Cultural Revolution's impact on music composed during that time, the careers and lives of Tan Dun and Wang Jian-Zhong, and an analysis and comparison of the two pieces. As I was preparing for this lecture recital, I was motivated to explore and celebrate more folk and culture-influenced music by East Asian composers. Although not part of my degree requirements, this inspired the creation of the Lunar New Year (LNY) Piano Concert Series with my piano trio, The Sis-ilia Trio. The solo recital was performed on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 in Britton Recital Hall. I opened with Bach-Busoni's Nun komm', der Heiden Heiland, BWV 659 (1981), followed by Beethoven's Piano Sonata, op. 31, no. 2 (1802), commonly known as the Tempest Sonata. The second half of the program featured Chopin's Etude in A-flat Major, op. 25, no. 1 and Etude in F Minor, op. 25, no. 2 (1836), and Rhapsody in B minor, op. 79, no. 1, and Rhapsody in G minor, op. 79, no. 2 (1879) by Brahms. I concluded the program with Fruhlingsrauschen (Rustle of Spring), op. 32, no. 3 (1896) by Norwegian composer Christian Sinding. This program showcases a range of expressive styles across different musical eras. The pedagogy workshop was presented on Saturday, June 14, 2025 in Watkins Lecture Hall. The presentation, "Piano Master Classes and Their Pedagogical Dynamics" discussed the crucial role of master classes in piano pedagogy across diverse contexts. I shared the general findings from different master class video analysis and surveys collected, as well as a syllabus unit I created as a resource for piano professors.
