초록/해제
요약Who, If I Cried Out is a 20-minute composition for viola and chamber orchestra (fl., ob., cl. in A, bn., hn. In F, tpt. In Bb, vib., solo vla., str.). It is a work that can exist as a standalone chamber piece, and can also serve as the basis for a collaboration with dancers. In Who, If I Cried Out, I have combined my interests in literature, chamber music, and vocality. Who, If I Cried Out is inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's "Duino Elegies," because of the strong imagery, expansive subject matter, and references to the voice-crying, shouting, whispering. I often take inspiration from poetry, and in this case my response closely mirrors critic Elisa Gabbert's reaction to Rilke's text: "I feel the force of [a] conversion when I read lines of Rilke's, lines with a sudden intensity that seems to burn a hole through the paper of reality...Lines that rip the sheet off reality, leaving only the naked ghost" (Gabbert, "Infinite Abundance on a Narrow Ledge," 145).There is no shortage of musical settings of Rilke's poetry in the 20th century. Notable composers who have created their own settings include Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg, Paul Hindemith, and Luigi Nono. However, in my search of contemporary classical works, the sole piece that appears to set a portion of the Elegies is String quartet no. 2, with soprano by George Rochberg. While I intend to add to the body of work that takes musical inspiration from Rilke's texts, I was also inspired by the large body of visual art after the Duino Elegies (these images include Ken Procter's charcoal drawings, Anselm Kiefer's landscapes, and Cy Twombly's oil paintings, among others). While Who, If I Cried Out, has textual episodes, the piece explores a musical landscape that has a narrative character independent from an explicit textual narrative. I center the viola and supporting strings as the primary "narrators" that move the piece from episode to episode.
