■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  presents  three  piano  recitals,  featuring  keyboard  music  from  the  eighteenth  through  twenty-first  centuries.  The  first  recital  begins  with  two  pieces  by  Domenico  Scarlatti  that  feature  repeated  notes  (one  slow  and  one  fast).  Next,  there  are  three  sets  of  short  pieces  by  American  composers  (Chick  Corea,  Amy  Beach,  and  William  Bolcom).  Finally,  a  mazurka  by  Frederic  Chopin  leads  into  his  second  piano  sonata  in  B-flat  minor.  The  second  recital  features  three  historical  pianos  (also  known  as  fortepianos)  and  a  lecture  about  the  pieces  performed  on  them.  Two  of  the  fortepianos  are  English  and  one  is  Viennese,  and  this  program  centers  around  compositional  responses  to  encountering  an  unfamiliar  type  of  piano.  Haydn's  trip  to  London  in  1794,  when  he  wrote  piano  sonatas  for  the  English  piano  (instead  of  his  familiar  Viennese  piano)  is  juxtaposed  with  Michael  Kropf's  experience  writing  a  piece  for  my  1826  Broadwood  square  piano  in  2023.    The  first  half  of  my  final  recital  presents  two  keyboard  suites,  one  by  J.  S.  Bach  and  one  by  Samuel  Barber.  Each  suite  is  a  collection  of  short  pieces,  each  inspired  by  a  different  style  of  music.  In  Bach's  case,  his  keyboard  suites  explore  different  Baroque  dances.  In  Barber's  Excursions,  he  puts  his  own  spin  on  distinctly  American  sounds  and  musical  genres.  The  second  half  of  this  recital  explores  ornamentation  and  variation  of  repeated  themes  in  the  music  of  Chopin  and  Mozart.  Both  composers  had  reputations  as  excellent  improvisers  and  pianists,  and  their  music  often  invites  embellishment.
