- 요약This dissertation reconceptualizes the Longshan Transformation (ca. 2400-1800 BCE) as a multi-scalar, network-driven process that reshaped North China at the end of the Neolithic. Rather than a uniform "collapse" triggered by climate change, the transformation is interpreted as a regionally diverse reconfiguration produced by the interplay between local developments and intensifying interregional connectivity. Using settlement pattern analysis, ceramic and mortuary data, and social network analysis (SNA), this study investigates the pace, variability, and systemic implications of these changes at both transregional and site-specific scales. At the macroregional level, the dissertation reassesses the climatic and subsistence conditions of the late third millennium BCE. While climatic instability and food stress occurred in places, Chapters 1-2 show that neither pattern aligns consistently with the timing or geography of societal decline. Chapter 3 synthesizes settlement surveys across multiple basins and demonstrates that the Longshan Transformation unfolded not as a single synchronous collapse but as a sequence of regionally staggered contractions and reorganizations spanning roughly two centuries. The second half of the dissertation focuses on Taosi in the Linfen Basin. Chapter 4 traces shifts in ceramic production and mortuary practice, documenting a movement from diverse, elaborated repertoires to more standardized, Highland-oriented forms. Elite strategies likewise shifted from conspicuous feasting and prestige goods to ritual performances involving animal and human retainers. Quantitative analysis of grave assemblages confirms a broader transition from material display to ceremonial authority. Chapter 5 applies SNA to elite interaction networks, revealing Taosi's changing position: early centrality, shared prominence with Shimao in the Middle Phase, and subsequent decentralization in the Late Phase. Despite fluctuations in centralization, overall connectivity remained high. I argue that this dense interconnectivity initially a catalyst for cultural florescence-also magnified local disruptions into macroregional crises, producing the Longshan Transformation as a network-wide phenomenon. This dissertation advances three conclusions: (1) climate and subsistence stress were contributory but not primary drivers; (2) the transformation was regionally variable rather than a uniform collapse; and (3) interregional interaction, functioning as a prehistoric form of globalization, generated both opportunities for sociopolitical complexity and systemic vulnerability.
