요약Extensional tectonic settings, exemplified by the Afar Depression (AD) triple junction in Ethiopia and the Basin and Range Province of southwestern North America, create favorable conditions for fluviolacustrine basin development and the formation of volcanic fields. Normal faulting drives the down-dropping and tilting of full and half grabens, generating relief and accommodation space for fluvial systems, lake basins, and associated sediment accumulation. Continued stretching and thinning of continental lithosphere promotes decompression melting of the upper mantle, fueling volcanism across rifts; in the Afar Depression, magmatic activity is further enhanced by an underlying mantle plume.This dissertation integrates detrital zircon geochronology, basalt geochemistry, and field and remote-based geologic mapping to investigate the interplay of hydrology, sedimentation, and volcanism in extensional environments. Research focuses on Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary rift basins of the Lower Awash Valley in the AD and on the La Laja scoria cone, the youngest explosive vent in the Quaternary-modern Pinacate Volcanic Field (PVF) of Sonora, Mexico, located within the southwestern Basin and Range and proximal to the Gulf of California transtensional rift.Detrital zircon U-Pb results from Miocene-Pleistocene sedimentary packages, coupled with analyses of modern Awash and Mille River sediments, reveal strong tectonomagmatic control over basin configuration and paleolake distribution during the past ~9 Ma in the Afar region. The spatial and temporal evolution of these basins is closely tied to the birth, development, and migration of the Afar rift-rift-rift triple junction. My findings align with models proposing north-northeastward triple-junction migration and further constrain its timing to ~2.9-2.6 Ma.Tephra stratigraphy, basalt geochemistry, and detailed mapping of lava flows at the La Laja scoria cone (12 ± 4 ka) elucidate the chronology and eruptive dynamics of the youngest explosive event in the PVF. The LLT-2 tephra deposit indicates an eruption column height of 3-5 km with a duration of 13 ± 7 hours, consistent with explosive Strombolian activity. Major and trace element geochemistry of lavas and silicic xenoliths indicates that La Laja accessed magmas from different crustal levels, including a shallow-crustal batch undergoing fractional crystallization and bulk assimilation silicic country rock.
