- 요약This dissertation investigates how Western scientists' social identities, particularly their identification with Western science, shape intercultural collaborations with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) holders and culture bearers. Although such collaborations are widely regarded as essential to advancing ethical and sustainable responses to climate change and environmental degradation, they often fall short due to unequal power dynamics and incomplete integration of knowledge systems. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and a mixed-methods approach, this research examines potential psychological barriers to equitable collaborations, specifically, how Western scientists' social identities impact their openness to collaboration, experiences of identity threat, and understanding of TEK. Study 1 involved in-depth interviews with marine scientists and Alaska Native key informants in the Gulf of Alaska, revealing how multiple social identities shaped scientists' views of legitimacy, power, and positionality in collaborations. Study 2 surveyed a broader sample of scientists to assess perceived identity threat, scientist identity strength, and attitudes toward knowledge system integration. Across both studies, scientists expressed support for intercultural collaboration but often maintained control over its structure and epistemic framing. These findings extend Social Identity Theory into a novel domain by highlighting the role of Western scientist identity in collaborations. This research underscores the need for educational and institutional reforms that support epistemic humility and identity transformation and reconstruction among Western scientists.
