초록/해제
요약Lucha libre is a spectacle-sport in Mexico that plays with social roles, national identities, and conflict. This project is dedicated to the ways that lucha libre, in its own ways, is a home to many luchadores that proudly form part of the LGBTQ+ communities and, also, has served as a punto de partida in other art practices to explore social categories and Mexican history. Mexican drag programs such as La Mas Draga have looked to lucha libre to challenge contestants to consider their own luchas and embody them on the stage. Fabian Chairez uses homoerotic paintings of luchadores to rearticulate masculinity and femininity through national symbology in his work. I position this dissertation in the crossover between Latin American performance studies; women, gender, and sexuality studies; and lucha libre studies. Through the theoretical frameworks of Judith Butler, Jose Esteban Munoz, Maria Lugones, Hector DominguezRuvalcaba, Sayak Valencia, and Kareem Khubchandani, I analyze and connect multiple queer arts circles in Mexico City through critical interactions with lucha libre and drag.
