요약How is color experience represented in memory? It is well known that some information is lost, even with a very short delay between encoding and testing. Previous work has shown that remembered colors are variable over repeated probes, and systematically different from the ground truth, or that they are biased. These effects have been linked to both perceptual and linguistic (cognitive) factors but previous studies have yielded mixed findings. This is thought in part to be due to neglect of the richness of language that may be used to encode color experience-individuals typically employ more than basic color terms in naming colors and may thus be referring to complex category structures in their mind, as well as insufficient consideration of variability in linguistic factors-individuals vary widely in the terms they use to name/encode their experience of color. The present study addresses this deficiency with a within-subjects design. In Experiment 1, participants' idiolects or personal naming systems for color experience and the structure of their color categories are carefully characterized using an extensive set of color samples (thus also expanding on previous work that has limited the study of color experience to the dimension of hue). In Experiment 2, participants' color experience and memory are probed using a color matching task under conditions of 0-sec delay (simultaneous matching), 10-sec delay (short-term memory), and 300-sec delay (long-term memory). Specific hypotheses are tested on both variability and bias in remembered colors. With regard to variability, individuals with larger and more complex idiolects are not found to have an advantage, but colors which are named similarly across individuals (or by the members of a language community) are remembered better. With regard to bias, remembered colors are found to be in the direction of greater saturation as well as toward the focal (or prototypical representation) of the category of the color. Overall, linguistic encoding is found to play an important role in the representation of color experience in memory.
