- 요약Youth with physical disabilities (YwPD) often face barriers to social participation and struggle with developing self-regulation, a crucial component of their overall development. While mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can be effective, they often require modification for accessibility. This dissertation comprises two studies.Study one is a scoping review (Chapter 2) designed to ascertain how MBIs can be modified to better serve YwPD, with a focus on individuals with physical disabilities (IwPD) of all ages. The scoping review yielded nine relevant articles from 6,021 sources to identify whether modified mindfulness-based interventions (M-MBIs) were primarily structural adaptations or involved the addition of therapeutic components.Study two was a multi-method (quantitative and qualitative analysis) intervention study that piloted the online Modified Learning 2 BREATHE (M-L2B) intervention and was designed to enhance social participation and self-regulation among YwPD. Thirteen YwPD, aged 11 to 17, completed the study. Quantitative analyses (Chapter 3) measured primary outcomes of social participation (Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation [CASP-YR]), self-regulation (Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire [SSRQ]), and secondary outcome measures (Generalized Anxiety Disorder [GAD-7], Social Interaction Anxiety Scale [SIAS], Pain Anxiety Symptoms Scale [PASS], Perceived Stress Scale [PSS-4]). This feasibility and acceptability study did not yield statistically significant changes in outcomes. Individual-level analyses revealed clinically meaningful shifts in SSRQ, GAD-7, SIAS, PASS-20, and PSS-4 scores. Exploratory analysis with Pearson's correlation revealed that increased self-regulation was significantly associated with reduced generalized and social anxiety. In contrast, higher social participation correlated with more significant social interaction and generalized anxiety. The qualitative analysis (Chapter 4) explored YwPD's experiences with the online Modified Learning 2 BREATHE (M-L2B) intervention, which focused on its perceived effect on social participation and self-regulation. The study explored how YwPD engaged with the intervention, its effect on self-regulation and social interactions, and its influence on intrinsic motivation and participation. As the research progressed, two additional overarching questions emerged: how YwPD generally experiences social participation and self-regulation, and how M-L2B influences these aspects. Through key themes like "The Interplay of Agency, Autonomy, and Control," "Role of Support Systems," and "Fostering Resilience," the intervention revealed YwPD's lived experiences helped explain their social engagement and self-regulation.
