- 요약This dissertation investigates low-frequency, neutral beam injection (NBI)-driven instabilities-Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes (TAEs) and fishbone (FB) instabilities-in the spherical tokamaks MAST and MAST-U, with a focus on their effects on fast-ion confinement and bulk plasma behavior. Using a combination of diagnostics, including beam emission spectroscopy (BES) and soft X-ray measurements, detailed experimental characterizations of these instabilities are performed to support validation of theoretical and simulation models and to inform reduced fast-ion transport calculations.First, global radial mode structure measurement of TAEs in the MAST discharge 26887 at 180 ms are made with soft X-ray and inverted to obtain the emissivity fluctuation spatial structure using a novel technique. The structure shows characteristics consistent with theory for (n,m,m+1) = (1,1,2) TAEs. The global linear gyrokinetic simulations of TAEs in MAST using the Gyrokinetic Toroidal Code (GTC) are verified and validated against the measurements. The results demonstrate good agreement in mode frequencies and radial structures, providing one of the first successful validations of gyrokinetic models in spherical tokamaks. Discrepancies observed in the poloidal harmonics motivate further experimental efforts to measure fast-ion anisotropy and mode structure in greater detail.Second, this work explores the impact of FB instabilities on core confinement in MAST and MAST-U, revealing evidence of substantial magnetic axis shifts and thermal species temperature drops, despite the absence of conventional sawtooth activity. Novel core poloidal mode structures measurements are obtained first time in a spherical tokamak using a 2D BES system. The measurements reveal that not all FB-like modes have the expected (n,m) = (1,1) dominant mode numbers and structures in the core. More importantly, noticeable thermal species temperature drops occur after the appearances of these modes. This study highlights the importance to improve understanding and predictive capabilities for these modes to mitigate their associated thermal species temperature drops, and hence the direct impacts on the Lawson criterion. Finally, reduced-model transport calculations using ORBIT-Kick are performed for both TAEs and FBs. By incorporating measured mode amplitudes and frequency chirping, ORBIT-Kick captures the enhanced fast-ion transport induced by rapidly evolving instabilities. These simulations highlight how differences in mode structure and orbit location determine whether transport leads to losses or internal redistribution. The calculated transport signatures are positioned for future validation against diagnostic measurements such as neutron emission and FILD signals.Collectively, the results contribute to improved predictive capability for fast-ion behavior in the presence of MHD activity, and provide a framework for integrating diagnostic measurements into transport modeling for spherical tokamaks.
