- 요약Thrifting is the purchase of apparel in secondhand markets. This consumption behavior can conserve both financial and environmental resources, making it a key component to the circular economy. Prior research suggests that frugal consumption tactics evoke negative observer impressions, which could discourage thrifting despite its benefits. This dissertation investigates how observers perceive consumers who thrift, revealing that thrifting evokes more positive impressions than other frugal tactics. Eight studies show that observers have positive impressions of thrifters (as compared to other frugal tactics). A key mediator of the positive effect of thrifting on observer impressions is attributed motives of horizontal (vs. vertical) differentiation to thrifters. The effect of thrifting on observer impressions has a side benefit such that negative associations of luxury display are mitigated under conditions of thrifting. The effect is also found to be robust across observer sustainability motives, consumer sustainability motives, consumer financial constraint, and observer income. These studies shed new light on the increasingly common practice of thrifting and suggest ways that marketers may leverage consumer interest in sustainability.
